Dara's Reflection
The social justice issue I chose to research was depression and mental illness. Ever since I was little, depression and mental illness has been an issue on the forefront of my mind. Throughout my life I have suffered from depression and anxiety; I have watched others suffer through them and other mental illnesses; this has created a deep desire to find peace within and help others who seek it find it. Through my research I started to fully comprehend how many life's our inflicted with mental illness and realize still how very much the topic in and of its self causes distaste and fear. I do not feel that my perspective has changed, only that my knowledge and my heart has been broadened by the material I have researched.
At first I wanted to submit all of my major papers, but with time restraints, it helped me narrow down which papers and projects to submit. Selecting and refining the projects I chose to enter was decided based on how I felt my material would impact anyone who happened to read the material I submitted. In hope that whoever happens to read my material may find understanding through my comic strip; a helpful point of view on mental health through my project was revised with facts about the issue; and sympathy towards those with depression more specifically, due to my own personal experiences on the matter such as I have expressed in my memoir; my memoir needed a lot of revision and clarity in order for others to understand it more clearly. In refining my material for the magazine I found that the original projects had little gems inside that needed to be chiseled out of all the chaos and confusion. The final products you see will in no means be flawless, I know that I will look back on this project and will still find little pieces that need to be refined and polished.
I found revising and designing each other’s work as well as the magazine to be extremely beneficial to the final product. I was assigned the role visual editor, under this assignment I formatted some of the pages, created the header for the magazine, as well as made the presentation for our group. Interacting online can be difficult, there were a few misunderstandings, due to the help of the teacher we were able to refocus and move forward into producing our final product.
Dear Future English 2010 Students,
This project might seem daunting at first but once you get working on it you seem to get into a groove that goes more quickly then you first imagined. If you do not understand what is expected of you fake it 'til you make it. In other words take the first task and attempt it, if you have questions ask, you will be surprised by the outcome.
Communication is paramount in order to produce a harmonious group. Due to the nature of the course, being online, you need to communicate with your group up front when to expect you online in order to communicate and get the work done. If there are questions or concerns do not hesitate to voice them to your group or your teacher as soon as possible.
Best of luck,
Dara
