Diana's Reflection
Immigration Reform
When I saw the question of why I selected this issue so many things came to mine. Immigration Reform is very personal for me and my family. Although I’m a U.S. citizen my husband is an undocumented immigrant. Today a new challenge has begun for my family, my husband will be loosing his job and I will have to return to work. I’ve enjoyed being a stay at home mother for the last two years, I’ve done so much with my daughter’s that I would have never imagined. But that will end soon, because my husband is undocumented it’s three times harder to find a job. Immigration reform is our only hope for him to be legalized, so one day he can apply for any job he would like, have fair pay, and not worry about deportation. Everyday I fear tomorrow but I haven’t lost hope for a possible reform of our immigration laws.
It’s hard to write about this issue because it’s so personal and it’s been difficult to disconnect my emotions and be neutral. I could easily just tell everyone why our laws need to be reformed and that it must be done right away but there is a lot more to this issue. I follow a lot of groups that support immigration reform, I also read, watch and listen to anything and everything about reforming immigration laws. I follow senators and governors and read a lot about their thoughts and feelings about immigration. I need to be informed. My research didn’t start with this assignment, my research started since many years ago. The research I've done and did during this semester helped me to put my Evaluation and Position Argument together.
I decided to make an adaptation to my profile; I started the profile about Congressman Luis Gutierrez as my revision because I wasn’t quite sure about the profile assignment. I started with a simple power point presentation and today it’s a video. It’s funny to me because I have never used anything other than the basic and now I can make a video out of a presentation, wow. A lot of things from this English 2010 class were new to me. I appreciate that Professor Bickmore was always giving us a little push to try new things. I learned that even when something seems hard or impossible you might be surprised once you actually try it. With my video I did the audio recording about 10 different times and at some point I felt frustrated but overall it was a great experience.
I never really like group work because it’s difficult to get different minds to agree on one thing. I thought it would be easier this time around because we are all adults and my experience was a very positive one. We had some miscommunication problems at first but once we passed that little bump we have done nothing other than work hard. I’m the Editor in Chief for our magazine and I think that the hardest thing is telling others what to do just because you don’t know how others will react. I started an email thread which at first was a little long and confusing but we also interacted via our group page and that seemed to work as well. I know what my strengths are and I’ve always been good at being a leader, but I also know that there are things that are out of our control and we should be respectful towards others. I think that overall we all did an excellent job at fulfilling our roles.
For future classes I would like to tell you that communication is the base of your collaboration, without it you have nothing. So just remember to communicate with each other and respond to emails or chats. Be patient because at the end I’m sure everyone wants to contribute in order to get a good grade.
